We are very honoured and pleased to announce that Agassiz-Waterhen River Lodge & Outfitters has the biggest non-resident black bear in Manitoba during the spring and fall 2005 Seasons.  Congratulations to John Johnson of Bryan, Ohio whose spring black bear scored 21 12/16 B&C and squared an amazing  8'2".

Thank you to Wes Wall and Rudy Turman of the Manitoba Big Game Trophy Association for officially scoring the skull and keeping it until the December 31 deadlines for entries was over.

Most serious black bear hunters know that the Parkland/Interlake regions in Manitoba produces some of the biggest black bears in the world.  This can be contributed to the excellent bear habitat and untouched areas in our province, which consist of heavily dense forest, swamps, rivers, creeks, and agriculture land.  Our new outcamp area, Tan Lake, has had this honour several times over the years, while owned and operated by Jim Knowles of Tan Lake Outfitters, as harvesting the top black bear in Manitoba for skulls over 21 and 22 inches B&C. (Please see non-resident section in Manitoba Big Game Trophy Associations Award books).

Congratulations John as we all know that harvesting a huge black bear of this size is very challenging, as every serious bear hunter knows how smart and cautious these mature bruins are around the baits and for the most part can turn nocturnal.  We look forward to many more years hunting this amazing animal and feel with the incrediable
habitat and territory allocated to us, will produce alot of incrediable black bears in the future due to excellent wildlife management!

December 28, 2005
On December 12th we left for a family vacation to Orlando, Florida and spent approximately 7 days at Walt Disney World.  To top the trip off, we decided to take the boys on an alligator hunt with good friends of ours Danny & Carla Sant Angelo of Okeechobee Outfitters, which is 2 hours south of Orlando.  Not only did the boys both get 6 foot alligators, we also saw 8-10 footers after.  They also hunted wild boar, quail and went fishing for trophy large mouth bass.  Thanks Danny and Carla for a great experience!

November 20/05

Here are some photos of myself and my guides clearing and cleaning an old quad trail where a fire went through years ago. This trail will allow us to access some great new areas for both whitetail and blackbear for 2006 and in the future. This new area consists of mature spruce, poplar, birch, tamarack and swamps where big animals live to get old.

November 3/05

On this day, I decided to take a break from scouting and putting up stands for the upcoming deer season, and do some duck hunting in the morning with my two sons. Here are some pictures of a pothole they jump shot that had about 50 red heads in it, just down the road from the Lodge. As we get ready for our 2005 whitetail season, thousands of canada geese, mallards and divers are still in the river by the Lodge.

November 1/05

On September 1st, me and good friend and guide of mine, Greg Sanderson, left for our elk hunt here in Manitoba. September 2nd, less than an hour on our first day we had at least 9-10 different bulls respond and/or call. The above pictures are one of them that charged right in as the sun came up. We also had a cow give us a perfect shot but chose to let her walk

WATERFOWL UPDATE

As I start putting up new duck blinds in alot of new areas and scouting for birds for the 2005 Season, the number of local ducks and geese is amazing! The Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes are flying over the lodge, flock after flock already as the birds start looking for grain and testing out their new flight feathers. Having such a wet June & July has really helped alot, as all the rivers, potholes and sleughs are full and you can't go anywhere without seeing puddle ducks in them or flying from the lake to the fields. I have also noticed alot of local Canvasbacks which should make for some great waterfowl hunting once again. The river at the Lodge is extremly high which will also make for some great walleye fishing this fall. Looking forward to seeing you all real soon!!

Rick

AUGUST 5, 2005

Spring 2005-Whitetail Scouting Report

As we left to do our last sportshow for the year down in Minneapolis,MN,snow still covered the ground. However, this was about to change very quickly! When we returned home the following week(April 3),the snow had all melted as spring had arrived and arrived with a vengence.During the middle of April we where reaching highs from mid 60's and low 70's with lots of sun which made for the quick melt.

The early spring and quick melt in return, made my spring whitetail scouting go alot smoother,as there was no snow to push with the quads or drifts to get hung up in.Accessing alot of my more remote areas was also alot easier this spring,as even though all the snow melted, the bottoms of all the swamps and sleughs remained frozen just long enough for me to check out alot of "new" areas for this fall and see how the deer wintered using the quads instead of the argos, unlike past springs.

Upon checking alot of our past "honey holes" too, I was seeing alot of deer and deer sign while on route and also while walking around,in both the new and old areas.Alot of the new areas that i was able to find,i found an incredible amount of sign in most areas from last years rut.Alot of these new areas have never been hunted and hopefully will produce some monster bucks for many years to come as they will start getting hunted this fall(2005).The deer i saw this spring are all in excellent shape. The number of deer, deer sign and shape the deer are in,tells me the deer all wintered good in our areas, which in return, should be an excellent fall! And we cant wait!!

The biggest shed i found this spring is from a huge 4 pointer with 2 abnormal points also. The G1 is 10 inches long,G2 is 12 6/8 inches and the G3 is 11 1/8 inches long.Main beam is 26 5/8 inches long and with excellent mass scores 81 even. The 2 abnormal points total 8 1/8 bringing the shed to 89 1/8.This buck given an 18 inch spread and the other side equaling the same, would gross around 200!!!This is absolutely incredible for a 8 point buck.I was also fortunate enough to find some other big sheds which are pictured below my review.A couple that would score around 170 with an average 18 inch spread.Another one i found is a couple years old and chewed up a little by squirels/mice. This shed is a huge non-typical with 6 inch mass around the H1 and H2.This buck could easily score in the 220-230 non-typical class.

I believe that the early, warm spring and below average snow fall we received during the winter(less stress on the deer), will definitely help our mature bucks get an early start on the development of their antlers, and maybe, just maybe we will see a strong, hard rut this fall!

**UPDATE ON "PALMY"**

As most of you know,"Palmy" is a huge buck whose sheds where found back in the springs of 2002 + 2003."Palmy" in his prime would score 250-260 non-typical.His sheds have not been found since then(last spring and so far this spring). We have hunted "Palmy" hard the last few falls to no prevail.A local farmer told me this spring that he saw "Palmy" twice last november. The area that this farmer has said too seen him in is approximately 25 miles from where his sheds where found in the past.If this is "Palmy",and thats a big if,was he running does then, does he leave during the rut, does he only come back to winter in this area where his sheds where found or has he left completely scensing we had been hunting him in his bedroom??? Or could it be another monster buck all together??? This just goes to show you over and over again, how smart these monster whitetail are.Old "Palmy" will probably be another one of those big whitetail that die of old age like so many do in our area due to this vast wilderness.I will keep you all posted if and when anything else erupts of this LEGEND buck.

See you all real soon,
Rick

The deer up at the lodge and our outcamp hunting areas are for the most part in excellent shape and having a real good winter. My last trip up to the lodge last week,i saw lots of deer and they all look really good with aproximately 12 inches of snow so far. With temperatures supposed to hit around 32 F this week,we should start seeing things starting to break with the arrival of spring very soon.At the end of april or middle of may,i will have a complete update for the 2005 deer season once i finish my spring scouting and shed hunting.Hopefully,i will have plenty of pictures of big sheds found this spring posted on this page then for you all to enjoy.

Back in March of 2004,my dad retired from his position with the province after 30+ years. To celebrate his retirement,i bought him a trip to Archer City,Texas to hunt wild Russian Boars with good friends of mine Brian & Tanya Beasely. The name of their operation is The Boars Den and known for the best "Pig Stick'in in Texas".The name says it all!Joining us was good friends Gary Dyckmeyer from MN and Steve Harden and Craig Hunter from GA.All the hunting was done with knives, thats right, knives! We ended up killing some of the biggest pigs they had ever seen as 4 of the boars went 350 pounds and a sow over 400 pounds! Thanks again Brian & Tanya for a menorable trip.See ya all this fall when we hunt those monster bruins in my neck of the woods.Anyone wanting information on this hunt can call me anytime for more information and phone numbers to contact Brian.

March 10/2005
Back on september 4/2004,before all of our bear and waterfowl hunters where to arrive,i had the oppurtunity to go caribou hunting with good friend of mine, Ken Gangler,owner/operator of Sub-Arctic Hunting Adventures up in Northern Manitoba. The caribou hunting in manitoba is one of the provinces best kept secrets as the animal numbers and hunting is awesome and second to none. This was my second hunt with Ken and this time took 10 buddies with me who all had a great time.We are all going back in 2006,and this time i will have my oldest son with me who will be 13 then.Cant wait!!Thanks Ken for the great hunt.Anyone looking for information or phone numbers to contact Ken, can call me anytime.
